Back to nature: Why it Matters

At Thorn & Thistle Apothecary, we believe what you leave out of a product is just as important as what you put into it.

Many modern personal care products are filled with ingredients that our great-grandmothers would never recognize—synthetic fragrances, parabens, petroleum derivatives, artificial colors, and a long list of chemical additives designed to improve shelf life, texture, or aesthetics. While these ingredients may be common, we are committed to a different approach.

We believe that nature often provides everything needed to create beautiful, effective products. That’s why we focus on traditional botanicals, nourishing oils, rich butters, beeswax, and carefully sourced essential oils.

What We Don’t Use:

Parabens

Parabens are synthetic preservatives commonly used to prevent mold and bacterial growth in cosmetics and personal care products. While these have been used for decades, many people are beginning to learn about the consequences of such ingredients and are choosing to avoid them. Instead, more natural preservation methods are becoming popular again.

Synthetic Fragrances

The word “fragrance” on a label can represent dozens—or even hundreds—of undisclosed (and harmful) chemical compounds. Instead, at Thorn & Thistle, we prefer the natural aroma of botanicals and pure essential oils.

Artificial Colors

Bright colors may look appealing, but they rarely contribute anything beneficial to the product itself. We allow nature to provide the color through herbs, oils, butters, and botanical ingredients.

Harsh Chemical Additives

Many commercial products contain fillers, stabilizers, petroleum-based ingredients, and synthetic compounds designed primarily to reduce manufacturing costs or extend shelf life. We choose ingredients that serve a meaningful purpose and contribute to the quality of the finished product.

Our Favorite Ingredients

Apricot Kernel Oil

A lightweight, fast-absorbing oil rich in fatty acids and vitamins. Apricot kernel oil helps soften and moisturize the skin without feeling greasy, making it a favorite for facial and body care products.

Arrowroot Powder

A natural plant-based powder often used to reduce the greasy feel of balms and body butters. It helps create a smoother, silkier finish on the skin.

Beeswax

One of nature’s oldest skincare ingredients. Beeswax helps create protective balms and salves while adding structure and helping lock in moisture.

Black Seed Oil

Pressed from the seeds of Nigella sativa, black seed oil has been treasured for centuries. It is rich in antioxidants and nourishing fatty acids that support healthy-looking skin.

Calendula Oil

Made by infusing calendula flowers into a carrier oil, calendula oil has long been prized in traditional herbal preparations. It is gentle, soothing, and commonly used in skincare products for sensitive skin.

Cocoa Butter

Extracted from cocoa beans, cocoa butter is rich, creamy, and deeply moisturizing. It helps create luxurious body butters and balms while contributing a subtle chocolate-like aroma.

Coconut Oil (Extra Virgin)

Extra virgin coconut oil is minimally processed and retains many of the naturally occurring compounds found in fresh coconuts. It provides rich moisture and contributes firmness to balms and body care products.

Coconut Oil (Fractionated)

Fractionated coconut oil remains liquid at room temperature. It is lightweight, non-greasy, and absorbs quickly into the skin, making it an excellent carrier oil.

Colloidal Oats

Colloidal oats are known for their soothing and moisturizing properties and have been used for generations in bath and body care products. They give our premium bath soaks their rich, creamy feel and luxurious texture.

Premium Essential Oils

Essential oils are concentrated aromatic compounds extracted from plants. Quality matters tremendously when choosing essential oils. Look for companies that control the entire process—from seed selection and cultivation to harvesting, distillation, testing, and bottling.

The best producers maintain rigorous quality standards, perform extensive testing, and provide transparency regarding sourcing and purity. If you would like a recommendation on what I use personally, message me or set up a free consultation HERE.

Grass-Fed Beef Tallow

A traditional skincare ingredient used since ancient times. Tallow is naturally rich in skin-loving fatty acids and has a composition remarkably similar to the oils found in healthy human skin. We use only tallow sourced from grass-fed cattle.

Jojoba Oil

Technically, a liquid wax rather than an oil, jojoba closely resembles the skin’s natural sebum. It absorbs beautifully, helps moisturize without feeling heavy, and is suitable for many skin types.

Lanolin

Derived from sheep’s wool, lanolin is highly valued for its ability to help retain moisture. It creates a protective barrier that leaves skin feeling soft and conditioned.

Mango Butter

Pressed from mango kernels, mango butter offers rich hydration with a lighter feel than some other butters. It contributes a smooth, luxurious texture to creams and body butters.

Shea Butter

A time-honored ingredient derived from the nuts of the shea tree. Shea butter is rich, nourishing, and deeply moisturizing, making it a staple in natural skincare formulations.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E serves two important roles. It nourishes the skin while also helping protect oils from oxidation, contributing to product freshness and stability.

Simple Ingredients. Thoughtfully Chosen.

We aren’t interested in creating products filled with unnecessary fillers or trendy ingredients that sound impressive but serve little purpose.

Instead, we focus on time-tested botanicals, traditional ingredients, and carefully selected oils and butters chosen for their quality and usefulness.

Our goal is simple: create products that we would feel comfortable using on ourselves and our own family.

Because when it comes to personal care, quality ingredients matter.
