How to Use Your Castor Oil Pack
You'll Need:
- Your Thorn & Thistle Organic Cotton Castor Oil Wrap
- Organic, cold-pressed castor oil
- Optional: 2–5 drops of your favorite essential oil
- An old towel (optional, to protect furniture)
- A cozy blanket and a good book (highly recommended!)
Step 1: Prepare the Wrap
Lay your wrap flat with the soft cotton side facing up.
Pour enough castor oil onto the center of the wrap to thoroughly dampen the portion that will rest against your skin. It should be well saturated, but not dripping.
If desired, add 2–5 drops of pure essential oil to the castor oil and gently work it into the fabric.
Step 2: Apply the Wrap
Lift your shirt so the wrap rests directly against clean, dry skin.
Place the saturated portion over the desired area, such as:
- Abdomen
- Liver area (upper right abdomen)
- Lower abdomen/pelvic area
- Lower back
- Other areas as desired
Secure the wrap comfortably using the attached straps.
Step 3: Add Gentle Warmth (Optional)
Many people enjoy placing a heating pad or hot water bottle over the wrap for additional comfort. Our Aromatherapy Comfort Animals (Coo or Haggis) would be perfect companions!
But if using a heating pad, choose a low to medium setting and use it only if it feels comfortable. The gentle warmth can make the experience especially relaxing, particularly on a cool evening.
(Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for your heating pad, and never fall asleep while it is turned on.)
Step 4: Relax
Now comes the best part. Find a comfortable chair, curl up with a blanket, enjoy a cup of herbal tea, read a favorite book, journal, pray, or simply rest quietly.
Many people enjoy wearing their wrap for 30–60 minutes, while others prefer wearing it longer if comfortable. Follow your own comfort level and discontinue use if irritation occurs.
Step 5: Remove & Store
After use:
- Remove the wrap.
- Wipe any excess oil from your skin if desired (many people simply massage the remaining oil into their skin).
- Fold the wrap and store it in a sealed glass container or reusable storage bag between uses.
Reapply castor oil as needed to keep the wrap evenly saturated.
Cleaning Your Wrap – Wash only when necessary.
Hand wash or machine wash on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent and allow to air dry. Because castor oil is naturally rich and viscous, some staining may remain—this is completely normal and won't affect the wrap's performance.
A Few Helpful Tips
- Wear older clothing while using castor oil, as it may stain fabrics.
- Consider placing an old towel beneath you to protect upholstery or bedding.
- If you're using essential oils, choose only high-quality, pure oils and follow the label directions.
- Do not apply over broken or irritated skin.
