What “Ditch & Switch” Means to Me

Just like you, I love for my home to feel clean, smell good, and offer family and friends a beautiful experience. But what happens when you find out that some of the products you’ve been using may be part of what’s causing some of your health issues?

For years, I assumed that if a product was on the shelf, it must be safe. Then I started learning.

I discovered that some of the very products I was using to create a “good housekeeping” home—cleaners, air fresheners, scented candles, laundry products, and even skincare—contained ingredients that could actually be adding to our body’s workload instead of supporting it.

That realization changed the way I looked at my home.

Easier Than You Think

Here’s what I learned…

It isn’t about being perfect. It’s about reducing your toxic load – the unnecessary burden on your body.

If your body is having to constantly rescue you all the time from unnecessary villains, it’s going to be too exhausted to do the real work. Your body is remarkably resilient. It can handle a lot.

Every day, your body is working hard to keep you healthy. But when it’s constantly processing synthetic fragrances, harsh cleaning chemicals, and unnecessary ingredients in personal care products, that’s energy and resources that should be directed elsewhere.

Think of it this way…

Liver

Busy breaking down synthetic chemicals…
instead of focusing on its many other vital jobs, including hormone metabolism, nutrient processing, and natural detoxification.

Feeling sluggish or just not like yourself? Reducing your overall chemical burden may be one piece of the puzzle.

Endocrine System

Responding to endocrine-disrupting chemicals like phthalates…
instead of simply regulating hormones, metabolism, growth, mood, and reproduction as it was designed to do.

Struggling with unexplained hormone issues? Environmental exposures may be one factor worth considering.

Immune System

Reacting to unnecessary chemical exposures…
instead of focusing its attention on genuine threats like viruses, bacteria, and damaged cells.

Does it seem like you’re always fighting something? Giving your body fewer unnecessary challenges may help support overall wellness.

If your body has to constantly rescue you from unnecessary villains, it’s going to be too exhausted to do the real work it was designed to do. God created you to be remarkably resilient. So your body can handle a lot.

But imagine how much better it can function when it isn’t constantly distracted by chemicals that were never meant to be there in the first place.

No one can eliminate every exposure—and that’s not a realistic goal. Every small swap matters. Every bottle of cleaner replaced. Every synthetic fragrance removed. Every safer skincare product chosen. Those little decisions add up over time.

When I first started making changes, I didn’t throw everything away overnight. I simply began replacing products as they ran out, choosing better options one at a time. Before long, our home looked the same—but what was inside those bottles was completely different.

And guess what? It smelled WAY better.

That’s why I started making the switch years ago. Not out of fear, but because I wanted to give my body—and my family’s bodies—every opportunity to function the way God designed them to.

Progress, not perfection. One simple swap at a time.

🌿 5 Easy “Ditch & Switch” Ideas

A healthy lifestyle doesn’t happen overnight. Instead of trying to replace everything at once, pick just one simple swap each month. Small changes really do add up!

1. Skip synthetic air fresheners.
Open a window, simmer citrus and herbs on the stove, or diffuse pure quality essential oils (not the cheap perfum-y ones at the health food store) instead of masking odors with artificial fragrances.

2. Switch your laundry routine.
Choose a 100% plant-based laundry detergent, and replace dryer sheets with wool dryer balls. Add a few drops of essential oil if you’d like a light, natural scent.

3. Beware of “fragrance” – Read the ingredient label.
If a product lists “fragrance” without explaining what it contains, look for a more transparent alternative. Companies are not required to disclose the individual chemicals that make up a fragrance blend.

4. Start with what touches your skin most.
Soap, lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, and lip balm are easy places to begin making cleaner choices because you use them every day.

5. Don’t throw everything away.
On a strict budget? No problem! As products run out, start replacing them with better options. It’s easier on your budget, less wasteful, and much more sustainable than trying to overhaul your entire home overnight. Look for sales or “starter bundles” from trusted companies who are passionate about clean, quality ingredients and beware of *green washing.

Remember: Progress is far more important than perfection. Every thoughtful choice you make helps reduce your overall chemical burden—and your body will thank you for it!

*Greenwashing is the deceptive practice of making a product appear more “natural” than it actually is. It allows businesses to capitalize on consumer demand for eco-conscious goods without making meaningful, fundamental changes to their practices.
